This is the most important question any human being can ask. The answer that you give reflects your beliefs, but not only that. I believe the answer you give to this question also determines how you will live eternally. Some people say that Jesus is a good man. Some say He is a prophet, but when the discussion was going on in Israel while Jesus was around, He himself asked His students the question: 'Who do you say I am?'. One of His students, Peter, answered: 'You are the Anointed One, the Son of the Living God'. (Matthew 16:16 According to the Bible, Jesus is the Son of God.

What happened before

The Bible says that in the beginning God created the heavens and the earth. God also created Adam, who's name simply means 'man', and Eve to be the king and queen of the earth. Adam an Eve were given the command to multiply and fill the earth. God gave them everything they needed for life. But because God did not make them robots, but beings that could make their own choice, He also gave them a choice to follow His leadership or to disobey and go their own way. God wanted them to be His children and he wanted to know that they would love Him voluntarily and not because they could not do otherwise.
However, when Adam and Eve were tempted and deceived by satan, an Angel who had rebelled against God, their relationship with God was broken. God had told them that they would die. Death in essence means 'separation'. So it meant that they would be separated from God Who is the source of life. From this point onwards Adam, Eve and all of their offspring were separated from the eternal life of God.
Nevertheless, God did not allow this separation to remain forever. Immediately after Adam and Eve were separated from God, He was looking for them and started to restore the relationship. Through about 4000 years of history, God was preparing to come to the earth and restore the possibility of human beings to have a relationship with Him again.
When Adam and Eve chose against God, they effectively handed over the lordship over the earth to satan. Satan once was one of the three main spirit servants (the Bible calls them angels) of God. However, the desire rose in him to take Gods place and therefore he rebelled against God. Because of this rebellion, evil came into existence. Since God is completely good, everything that goes against God is by definition evil. So, the result of Adam and Eve rebelling against God was that they lost their kingship over the earth and became subject to the rule of satan.

God sent Jesus to us

The only way through which the relationship between man and God could be restored is that God would take back the kingship over this earth. However, because God is good, the only way He could regain kingship is through the legal way. The legal way is that God would become a man Himself and then as man take the kingship from satan. God had delegated his kingship over the earth to Adam and Adam in turn had turned it over to satan.
So God could not take it from satan and Adam did not know how to take it back and also was no match for satan at that time, because he had subjected himself to satans rule. Because of this God found a way to come to the earth as a man. God made an agreement with a man called Abraham that He would be protecting him and Abraham would be part of Gods family. This agreement is called a Covenant and it is the strongest type of agreement that exists. As part of this agreement, God asked Abraham to give the best thing he had, which was his only son, Isaac, to God. Because Abraham believed God and gave His son Isaac, God now was obligated to give His only Son. The Bible says that God gave His son Jesus, who was the eternal Word of God (John 1:14) and who became a human being through birth from Mary. The Bible says that mary was a virgin and that she conceived Jesus, not through sex with a man, but through the Holy Spirit, who came over her and with His creating abilities planted the seed in her that was needed for her to conceive. Because of this, Jesus was not subject to the separation from God, but He started His life in the same way that Adam did after he was created by God.

The Ministry of Jesus

When Jesus grew up, He showed the people that He was a very good student of the Jewish holy scriptures, the Torah. The Bible says that already when He was 12 years old, he was teaching the Jewish teachers in the temple in Jerusalem about the Torah. The Bible says that these teachers were amazed about His understanding of the Torah and about the answers that He gave to their questions. (Luk. 2:46,47)
When Jesus was 30, He reached the age that He was allowed to become a teacher (In hebrew: a rabbi) himself. At that moment he started travelling around in Israel and teaching the people. Luke 4:16-30 describes that He went around in Israel as a rabbi and at a certain moment arrived in His home town, Nazareth. He went to the synagogue on the sabbath day and because the people all knew Him and knew that He was well taught in the Torah, the first 5 books of what today is the Bible, and that He was a young rabbi, they gave Him the honor of reading the scripture that day. Jesus opened the scroll and read a passage from a book of one of the prophets, Isaiah. He read from chapter 49:8, where it says:
'The Spirit of the Lord is upon Me, because He has anointed Me to preach the gospel to the poor; He has sent Me to heal the brokenhearted. To proclaim liberty to the captives and recovery of sight to the blind. To set at liberty those who are oppressed; to proclaim the acceptable year of the Lord.' But then something strange happened. Jesus sat down and said to them: 'Today this scripture is fulfilled in your hearing.'
Jesus claimed that what the prophet Isaiah had prophesied to the people of Israel several hundreds of years before, was something that actually applied to Him. Through this Jesus claimed to be The Anointed One of God. The Jews had been expecting their Messiah, their Savior, for a long time and many of their prophets had predicted the comming of this Messiah. Now Jesus claims to be exactly that. Jesus claims to be the savior of Israel of which the prophets had spoken.
It is no supprise that the people who heard this were exploding with anger and they wanted to kill Him. A claim like this was considered blasphemy. However, they had no idea that Jesus actually was indeed the Messiah. Jesus took upon Him exactly the ministry as He had quoted from Isaiah 49:8. Jesus:

  • Preached the good news of Gods Kingdom to everyone who wanted to hear Him.
  • Went around healing the brokenhearted, by comforting those that were in need.
  • Set the captives free, by casting demons out of many people that were demon possessed.
  • Healed many people who asked Him to be healed of their sicknesses.
  • Proclaimed that the time of Gods favor had arrived.

The books in the New Testament called the gospels (Matthew, Mark, Luke and John) are full of stories about Jesus doing exactly these things. So I recommend you to read these stories to see for yourself what Jesus did.

Jesus Death and Resurrection

After about 3 years of going around in Israel teaching in every place, healing the sick, casting demons out of people that were demon possessed and even raising some people from the dead, Jesus went to Jerusalem together with the 12 people that had become His students to celebrate the Passover feast. During this feast the Jews celebrate that God had brought them out of Egypt after 400 years of living away from the promised land of Israel.
After they celebrated the feast by having the Passover meal together, one of His students went out to the Jewish leaders of that time to betray Jesus. That night, Jesus was captured by the Jewish leaders and after a mock trial they concluded that He should be killed. However, because the Jewish nation was under Roman rulership, they were not allowed to execute the death sentence themselves and therefore they brought Jesus to Pontius Pilate, the Roman ruler in that area at the time. Although Pilate did not want to sentence Jesus to death the situation lead him to sentence Jesus to be crucified anyway.
On that day Jesus was taken to a hill near Jerusalem called Golgotha and was crucified there and after a few hours he gave His spirit to God and died. However, this is not where the story of Jesus ends. As it continues, the Bible tells us that after 3 days some women went to the grave where Jesus was buried but when they reached that place they found that the body of Jesus was not in the grave anymore. The Bible tells us that from that time Jesus appeared to several of His students and showed them that He had risen from the dead and by doing so, He had conquered death.
For about fourty days Jesus appeared to His students and was teaching them more about His Kingdom. At the end of this fourty day period He told them to stay in Jerusalem untill the time that the Holy Spirit was poored out on them and then they should go into all the world and share the good news of Jesus. After He gave them this command, He was taken up into the skies and went into Heaven where He is even today, sitting next to God the father and from where He is leading His Church.
After another ten days it was the day of pentecost and as the students of Jesus were gathered together in the temple in Jerusalem, the Spirit of God came as a mighty wind and filled them completely. The Spirit of God did not come back to stay in a building, as He had done a 1000 years before when the temple in Jerusalem was built and dedicated by king Solomon, but He now came to live in people who had given their lives to Jesus so He could be their King.

Eternal life for those that accept Jesus sacrifice

From this day on it is possible for every human being to become part of what is called 'the body of Christ' the Church of Jesus the Anointed One. Through His death and resurrection, Jesus has restored the way between God and human beings. While through Adam's rejection of God's leadership, the door was closed and eternal separation from God was the result, now through what Jesus did the door was opened again and God is reaching out through that door through the Church. The only thing we have to do is to accept what Jesus did and to grab Gods hand as He reaches out to us. The Bible says that when we believe in our heart that Jesus is Lord and we confess with our mouth, then we will be saved.
So, maybe this is the first time you have read this story of Jesus and something in your being is leaping up and telling you that you should accept this hand of God that he streches out to you. If that is the case, I want to ask you to speak out the following prayer. Praying is nothing more and less than talking with God. God is able to hear everything that you speak to Him, so be confident that what you are going to say now will be heard by Him.

God in Heaven, my father, I come to you at this moment. I have just read this story about how you have created human beings to be your children and how Adam rejected your leadership and through that we got separated from you eternally. But I have also read that you came to this earth to restore that relationship through your Son Jesus who sacrifices His life for me. I want to accept the hand with which you are reaching out to me and I confess now that I want Jesus to be my Lord and Saviour because I understand and believe that only through Jesus my relationship with You can be restored. Father God, I want to thank you for restoring my relationship with You and for being my father in heaven. Jesus, My Lord and Saviour, I want to thank you for what you did for me and I want to ask you to guide me every day of the rest of my life. I also want to ask you to fill me with your Holy Spirit, just as You did with your students on the day of Pentecost, so I will be able to serve You and the people around me through His Power which is able to restore people's relationship with you. Holy Spirit thank you for filling me and for being my guide from today untill the end of my life on earth.

Now that you have prayed this prayer, I recommend you to find a local group of followers of Jesus Christ. If you are already part of a Church community, don't hesitate to share with the leaders of this Church about the step that you have taken. If they do understand what you mean, stay with them and together with them become real followers of Jesus Christ. If they do not understand you, talk with God about this and ask the Holy Spirit to give you wisdom and lead you to a place where you are able to fellowship with other believers in Jesus. If you are not yet part of a Church, ask God to bring you into contact with other people who are followers of Jesus. If you have Christian friends, contacting them and sharing about the step you have taken is probably the best thing to do.

May the God of heaven, the father of our Lord Jesus Christ, bless you in every possible way and may He lead you every day of your life through His Holy Spirit.
